Clare Wardman

Clare, originally from Yorkshire, first came into professional contact with Cornwall as an undergraduate student through artist and visiting lecturer, Karl Weschke whilst she was studying Fine Art Painting and Drawing at Exeter College of Art and Design. She graduated with a B.A. Hons Degree and also holds an MFA (Distinction) from Falmouth University. She is an experienced, contemporary, visual art practitioner having worked at SPACEX Studios and since 2007 at 7 Porthmeor Studios which she shares with her partner, Iain Robertson - an internationally renowned abstract painter, who is also represented by The Art Hound Gallery.

Her work is represented in public art collections including Art UK, Art in Healthcare, Bayer plc, Falmouth Art Gallery, University of Edinburgh and the University of Minnesota, USA.

Clare’s work considers the notion of fragment as a generative process. To understand this phenomenon, she describes her practice as a form of ‘expanded painting’ engaging with traditional media such as painting, drawing and collage, and more recently, performance, artist moving image and sound. She has created many site-specific pieces here during Open Studios to evolve viewer-participatory events focusing on a material interplay between the built environment, its loci, and experiential studio practice. Architectural weathering, light, occupancy and cultural histories inform the content of her experimental and often transitory projects from the study of fragments of door paint to large abstract wall works.
