NEAT, NEAT, NEAT - ART, ART, ART

In 1974, Andy Warhol sat with David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Patti Smith in the back room of New York Club venue Max’s Kansas City, whilst the New York Dolls played and Debbie Harry served drinks as a waitress. They had all been drawn to the club by the New York school artists who had used it years before as a hang out - Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Marisol et al alongside William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. In 1975, Max’s Kansas City became the birthplace of Punk in New York.

Across the Atlantic in South London during the swinging sixties, Malcolm McClaren and Jamie Reid staged a protest at their art school in Croydon and Vivienne Westwood sold handmade silver jewellery, after studying silversmithing at Harrow school of art. In 1971, a shop on the King’s Road came up for rent - a perfect boutique for the art school graduates to create one of the birthplaces of  Punk in the UK.

Meanwhile, just after Joe Strummer had thought about being a cartoonist and Dave Vanian considered going into graphic design, in a hundred dingy basements and bedrooms, t-shirts and 7 inch singles were being hand screen printed, cuts up and photos from the NME and Sounds were being photo-copied and stapled together and black and white screen printed posters were being hand coloured. Hands-on printmaking was the other birthplace of punk.

Neat Neat Neat explores and celebrates this connection, as music fans in a digital world - we now step back to see the vital link between the poster, the pin badge, the LP cover and the music.

"It's at night when they come,
When I'm alone, and not with anyone,
Through the shouts and music,
of the crowd down the road boozing,
Near the free car park,
The bins and the alleyway, of the Chinese restaurant,
Number 3 for 2, and number 4 for 1"
- Sleaford Mods - BHS
